TUZLA COMMUNITY SCHOOL OF ENGLISH (TCSE)
Winter Semester 14th January – 26th January 2008

One of the core goals of ROM is to contribute to positive change in the region. In order to contribute to the maintenance of stability and development of the region, we have decided to go beyond Croatian borders and serve in Tuzla, Bosnia. Tuzla is one of 3 largest and multiethnic cities in Bosnia and Herzegovina with predominantly Muslim population and Serbian and Croatian minorities.   Furthermore, Tuzla has a large number of refugees from Srebrenica (where the biggest massacre of the Muslim population in Bosnia took place), as well as an increasing number of extreme religious Muslims (Vehabias) have also contributed to the polarization and discrimination of minorities. Although the war in the Balkans ended 10 years ago, there are still many issues that need to be addressed and resolved, especially dealing with nationalism and prejudices. 

Our goal with Tuzla CSE is two folded: The first goal is to target youth and adults from Tuzla to be involved in productive activities through learning English. During the CSE students are engaging in an interactive learning experience, where through learning the English language they also focus on the most important aspect of education – how to become a better human being. Our second goal is to offer opportunity to our ROMmates in Tuzla to get involved in something productive in their community which several of them did it gladly.

TCSE is a specialized language learning program that is intended for young adults and adults who benefit from the project in multiple ways. The classes are taught through creative workshops, games and activities, creative group presentations, use of computer and multimedia equipment...

The Winter Semester of the Tuzla Community School of English provides four levels of English language learning, and students attend the classes five - six times a week.

During implementation of TCSE 2008 we have cooperated with New Hope Baptist Church where the project took place.
